Rusted Nut Removal - Any Tips?

I am hoping to remove this very rusted hub nut. Any tips to make the removal easier?

Wire wheel the exposed threads first so it doesn't bind up when it does loosen, I give them a good spray of oil then.
Then give it a shot of the impact gun with a good fitting socket.

Drill two opposite holes through the front face of the nut and split it apart with a chisel.

Looks like it needs replacing anyhow so I shouldn't begger about undoing the but with owt but cutting

Agreed, that could be a locking shroud over the nut. It has been punched down into the keyway. Chisel it off, then tackle the actual nut.
However, if it's a BMW, then it may be the actual nut:


Either way, with it having been staked, it needs to be cut off and replaced.

That is a locking cap. Knock a screwdriver in on the recess to push up the indentation that locks the cap in place. Clean the surface rust off with a wire brush and cap will slide off with a bit of persuasion giving you access to the retaining nut.

Looks like the actual nut to me, you can see where the flange has been staked in the 'keyway'.

There probably was one of those on there once upon a time. I'd clean the threads up, copious amounts of penetrating oil left on over night and then give it a go with the buzz gun.

The nut is a 12 point type, like the pic. I am awaiting new hub nuts before starting this job.

ATF and acetone 50 / 50 mix is a brilliant penetrating release agent.

Good slosh on the affected parts and leave overnight if possible.

i second that mix it works well id also give it some heat though

I have tried Honda ATF mixed 50/50 with acetone but it does not mix, it separates out almost instantly. If you have experienced differently what ATF are you using?

Most of the above with the cleaning and lube, I would probably spend a bit more time cleaning up the thread on the stub axle before winding the nut off. Thread files are your best friend on stuff like this, the nut is sacrificial .

i have not used on of those before anygood? any links I just use a wire brush.
