not sure why but i have never suffered condensation in my workshop its standalone at the bottom of the garden tin roof but insulation then ply wood under that ontop of wooden joists , deos the amount of wood surface area you have make any difference?

It was 0 degrees the other day but 8 inside and i rarely heat it , the only thing it could be is the floor is about 8 or 9 inches of concrete maybe that keeps the heat in ?

My dehumidifier is a desiccant type. It generally keeps the temperature at an adequate level as well as reducing the humidity, when turned on for one hour each day. It only runs when the leccy costs 9.5p/kWh.

Mine's a compressor type, so some additional heating is necessary this time of year. Have considered getting a dessicant type for the workshop, but still undecided.

Opened the garage this morning expecting a bit of condensation.

Well, I got more than I bargained for

I will have to get the fan running, dry, clean and oil everything.

It has been just the "perfect storm" for condensation on large lumps of workshop metal.

Wonder if anyone else did the same.

Mind you, the dehumidifier started playing up. The compressor wouldn't run, making repeated attempts to start. The relative humidity slowly climbed ominously upwards. The problem turned out to be the motor starter contacts, which showed signs of possibly being worn or dirty. A shot of switch cleaner, followed by a blast with an air duster seems to have done the trick. The workshop warming beforehand seems to have helped.

I set mine on 65%. I've found that to be the best compromise. My **** would be pinching if I saw that % on the display.

If it makes you feel any better, mine is just as bad. The only thing that seems to have escaped is the surface grinder as I keep it soooooo well wrapped up when it's not in use.

That little oil filled rad is one I bought recently, from B&M. 650W. That's there more to prevent the dehumidifier icing up if temps drop too much. The dehumidifier is the smallest Arete model. Have to empty that every 3 days, approximately.

The first year or so I was here I didn't have a dehumidifier in there. Lesson quickly learnt, it was.

The lathe is usually dripping in oil anyway so it’s made milk



A couple of hours with the heater on has brought the cast stuff up to air temp and stopped new condensation forming.

Been over everything with a rag and oiled it all up.

Just been out to mine and it's like someone has hosed it all down in there
I've cleaned and oiled the lathe, bike and chop saw. I didnt even bother avoiding the brakes on the bike this time round.
ACF50 and a dehumidifier on the way soon I think!
Any recommendations for the dehumidifier?

I have a big Dri-Eaz Evolution capable of 63L a day but went into the garage yesterday to start transferring tools into the new tool box only to find everything covered in condensation as the temperature had dropped below 0C and frozen the water in the outlet pipe. Back up and running today and it’s quickly drying everything out and luckily had chance to wipe the tools dry as they were transferred.
Luckily all the power tools are in sealed PackOut cases otherwise they may have been damaged as the condensation was that bad.

I put mine on yesterday, a 20 yr old Hotpoint compressor type. By this morning it has filled it's 4 litre container and stopped, so there was a fair bit of moisture in there. Also the garage side floor was soaking where the wind had blown the moisture under the door. So now I have two dehumidifiers and a heater on half heat on in there, and I've stuffed wet sheets along the bottom of the doors.

Any recommendations for the dehumidifier?

I've gone with Meaco's. Had an Ebac Powetdri first, but that developed a fault. Gave that to my niece when it came back repaired.

That's why I have a heater in the workshop now. The fins iced up on mine last year. A small heater simply keeps it at a tolerable temperature for the dehumidifier, in there.

In my old stone-built workshop, condensation was terrible. The best non-powered defence I found was to drape an old cotton bedsheet over the lathe and mill.
