Yep just hose it off, as far as I know no environmental issues which you might get from using acid, never tried it on brass or copper.

Buy molasses its about £8 for 4 litres it's as native as treacle its usually used as an additive in animal feed so any equine or agricultural shop will sell it.

Trying to think now if we have any supplier of that ilk locally. Btw, how bad is the smell from the stuff after it's been in use a few days? I've seen vague reference saying that it's anywhere from notable to smelling of vomit.

Molasses gives off a smell like a brewery, I found it needed a warm ambient temperature before it worked.

It also did something strange to a cast iron exhaust manifold I left immersed in it.

The surface seemed to soften and I could smear the metal when I wiped it.

Must admit I left it in for some time.

I prefer citric acid much cleaner, not as sticky.

If you didn't want the de-rusting agent to 'run'; i.e you need a gloop that stays pretty much where you put it, would it be possible to dilute molasses to a suitable consistency (i.e. less than 1:9), paint it on and leave it for a few hours?
