I have five large wheels (16" Suzuki Grand Vitara items) that need refurbishing, before fitment of new tyres, for my Mahindra MM540.
I've been getting quote for both blasting clean and coat of primer so I apply the top coat myself at home as well as having them fully finished (blasting then either powder coating or 2 pack). Every time the bulk of the cost is the initial rust removal from the wheels. The front face and tyre well are still sound paint but the rear is rusty.
I'll be honest and admit I simply can't afford the cost of having them professionally done so am looking at the DIY options. In the past I've had sucess with electrolysis rust removal so am going for this route with the wheels. The loose rust will be removed and area cleaned up as much as possible before immersion in the electrolite solution.
Question however is do I paint strip the sound areas clean before or after the rear rust removal ? I think after but welcome other peoples opinion.
Thanks.
