Rust protection of machinery

I have an almost buried workshop so I got condensation when it's warm out and ground seepage through the floor when it's wet. Basically get a shower/bathroom fan (£15 screwfix job) draws very little electric, duct it in from an outside dry spot (ie under cover) and leave it on 24/7 it makes a huge difference to condensation. The air will find it's own way out!

I am another fan of ACF-50. My welding table sits outside in the rain and all it gets is an occasional wipe over with a few drops.

Last month I took the screws out of the end slats and turned them over to see how much rust there was. I hadn't painted them for 2 reasons, the first being that I wanted a low electrical resistance where they contact the frame and the second being - err, I'm lazy . It was a year since the underside of the slats last saw any ACF-50 and not a sign of rust.

Having said that, if I was packing something away under cover and not using it for a year or more, I would probably use a good dollop of grease.

.......but underneath, in the drip tray's there are workshop 240volt lead lights with energy bulbs, about 10-11 watt's......

Heated vivarium cable is excellent for this application too. You've reminded me I have a few, must root them out in preparedness

I just spray duck oil on and cover with an old bed sheet . simple to wipe off when u want to use the machine

yep, any old oil sprayed on will protect it fine, I don't use plastic sheets as the condensation is a nuisance. Old bed sheets or a decorators dust sheet works well and where it contacts the working parts a good soak of oil.

I've mentioned before, the very highly thought of Dinitrol wax isn't fantastic if the parts are already damp, the rust happens underneath it!

A bit of ventilation helps too, dries off condensation. Covering a machine with plastic will cause condensation too.

Won't even matter if it's getting wet if it is covered in grease properly. We did some experiments back at college even submerged in water for a few months steel didn't rust covered in a good dose of grease - couldn't say that for some of the rust protection products though

We used to spray machined parts that had to be stored outside, with a substance, that for all the world looked like the pink soap you find inside brillo pads. Smelt the same too. It used to dry and protect the surface.

Anyone know what it was ?

ACF50 is kinda pink and frothy

All our turbine machined faces and journals etc were coated with Shell Ensis fluid, Thats what its made for. Never had a single problem,

I believe home and workshop machinery use WD40 to protect their secondhand machines for sale outside under tarps or you could invest in some Ankor Wax which is brillaint.

ACF50 would be my recommendation too. One £15 can from a motorcycle shop should do the job.

looks like Shell Ensis fluid is not that easy to get any more on a quick google search I did and no hits on fleebay other than empty tins at silly money

Yes you can pick up an aerosol of it pretty cheap and it goes a long way.
Not thick enough for outdoor use but perfect inside.

I cut my Shell Ensis 50 / 50 with white spirit which allows me to spray it from a hand sprayer. This sprayer sits at the back of my bench and it always to hand when needed for anything that needs a bit of protection. Still using the original 20 litre drum that I bought 12 years ago
