Made me think of the time the MOT bloke made a comment about my choice of colour for the dampers on the Surf. I fitted some Procomps years ago, (their factory finish was notorious for being skimpy), so painted those a dayglo green, and then the Fox steering damper got done dayglo orange. He made a comment that if I ever ran over anybody, they'd probably be telling the coppers that they had no idea about the reg, but that the underside of the vehicle was bloody bright.

Matt the really funny thing about that paint would be it's white in normal light. The wife will tell you it looks lovely........... until later that night when she looks out and suddenly it's glowing green in the dark

This is real Zinc primer http://www.fosroc.com/product/show/galvafroid , we use it for coating the cut ends of Unistrut, you can tell it has a lot of solids (zinc) in it the tins are unbelievably heavy.

There's a lot of 'cold-galvanising' sprays that I swear would let most plastics rust, the majority are just really, really ****.
If you want a good one, I've used Bilt Hambers Electrox on steel that has been outside in all weathers for 3 years, and it didn't have a spot of rust on it in all that time, even without a topcoat.

re the Hammerite, would never use it, overated rubbish in my opinion, the recoat time is too critical to ensure bonding to the original coat, too easy to end up with layer sitting onto layer and not combined into it.

Must have had the recipe changed in the last few years as I have never had a problem with it "the hammered type"

Galvafroid is an excellent product, I have items that were shot blasted and the given a coat of Galvafroid 40 years ago and still in perfect rust free condition despite not being given a top coat of other paint, Expensive and very heavy but if you want the best you have to pay for it,

This is just it Gordon, I'm happy to pay for something that works but I genuinely thought that rattle can would do it. Complete crap it is.

Got most of the paint off yesterday, was still doing it by torchlight at 11PM. Took nigh on seven hours to get it all stripped off

Okay just a little update for anyone who's interested.

Spoke to two local firms who do powder coating / galvanising on their website. Kellwood Engineering don't do it at all. The other place was Franklin Engineering who do it but have a minimum £200 charge. Both firms were kind enough to point me in the direction of Ewart Engineering in Gretna so that will be my next port of call for a quote.

Should that fall through it's back to drawing board and I am thinking Galvafroid/Electrox in two coats and be done with it. Screw the colour as long as it don't rust. I looked at Lechler epoxy but by time you factor in the hardener and a top coat it's pretty pricey.

God I hate painting.

I tried rattle can galv paint from screwfix, painted a bare metal BBQ stand(not having to deal with any heat) covered it with a coat of mat black, After a month outside the whole thing had turned orange/brown with rust, I sprayed some galvafroid years ago thinned with genclene solvent, My mouth tingled for ages when the zinc spray reacted with my fiilings

Ahh but did the item you sprayed (and your teeth!) stay rust free is the question!

Was going to ask how hard the galvafroid stuff is to spray, sounds okay?

I did some modifications to some steel framing a while ago and I haven't made up my mind what colour to paint it so I just slapped a coat of red-oxide on it - been outside for two months now uncovered and no rust coming thro at all. So that's what I'd use as a primer for steel that lives outside

Still got the teeth!!! We used to use lots of Genclene solvent at one of my places of employment,so it tended to get used for thinning all sorts. It was excellent for thinning Hammerite and then spraying, lovely even hammered finish,

Is the old red-lead paint still as good as it used to be? I remember mixing some up from powder and linseed oil.
