thought I'd chuck in some info on the subject, I've tried the tricks of old engine oil painted on etc-messy and a pain to clean off, WD40-sometimes OK.
Products I now use are:
Scottoil FS 365, Wurth Corrosion Inhibitor, and ACF 50.
FS365, water based- leaves a slightly oily sheen, easily cleaned off, safe near plastic etc penetrates into nooks n crannies.
Wurth, water based- leaves a very light coating, safe near plastics etc- will clean off with a rag and WD if needed -can often just be left.Penetrates into nooks n crannies.
ACF 50, leaves a heavier coating, said to deal with any rust already there, best results usually when applied by brush.
None of em are cheap, so it depends on how much value you place on your kit.
I use em on my motorcycles and there is no rust/alloy fur or any other corrosion.

If you google them you can find links to discussions on other forums for more info.
My personal choice is the Wurth but I cannot get it over here, I managed to cop 10 litres of FS365 and use that and its worked well for me but I prefer the Wurth. I do use ACF50 but very sparingly as its messy and attracts dirt n dust- more of a spot treatment for my use.
