running my welder off a generator

hi there im struggling for a power supply at the mo and was wondering what sort of genny power wise i would need to run my mig welder it's a old sip ideal 220 with a 16amp plug the bloke i bought it off had a 32 amp plug on it,so would prefer to revert back to the 32 amp plug but unsure what kva i would need

2x what the welder requires. It should have a KVA rating on the spec plate.

3x is preferred, 5x ideal.

For my 185, I was advised a minimum of 7.5kva.

the spec plater is gone and cant really find out much about the machine it,s quite old have tryed google all it brings up is my post,s from this forum and the new range

Hi Caveman

Well it might be, although listed as 8+ kva, constant output is 6.4 so may struggle on higher settings.

As i understand it, when running any welder from a gen its the heavy startup draw of power that is the killer, so it really depends on the oomph of the motor to keep it turning during these peaks.

thats only my very basic knowledge and I know there are others on here who can advise you.

cheers paul think its gonna have to be a diesel the prob is i need it to be transportable aswell
