run out on drill

Just noticed quite a bit of run out on my drill but when I measured it seemed ok.

What is an acceptable figure?

It varies from 0 to 2

Depends what your doing with it?
For example If your drilling and reaming holes for dowels then you need to be within a thou or so. If your putting clearance holes for black bar in bits of flat then ten thou won’t matter

firstly you need to measure the runout on the spindle of the drill then on the Jacobs Chuck, then on a a bit of ground stock in the chuck. That will tell you where your error lies

me too...run it fast and you wont notice

Measure the runout on a ground pin right by the chuck and by the tip, its possible the chuck isn't sitting straight.

Haha, don't complain.

I had 2 mm on mine.
New bearings and some good whacks on the spindle shaft got it down to 0,02 on the spindle and 0,2 down the drill shank.

It's getting worse again so retirement is getting closer for it after 30 years abuse.

if only 2 thou out total its only 1 thou of center its nothing on a drill try it with a bit of ground silver steel in chuck. the drill isnt forced to be perfect but thats nitpicking

From where I am sat it looks like the drill is touching half way up the lever arm which is making the gauge over read.

I agree with 8ob, you need to have the ball end of the DTI measuring the run-out for a more accurate reading.

I thought just the tip was in contact but the lighting is very poor will check again.
