Hi, am quite new to arc welding and am using rough/ spare material that is grinded filed and cleaned.
I have used a 30mm by 50mm squared bar and a 2mm thick plate as a base to weld blocks of 30*50 to the 30*50. Also round pipe 1.8mm to both bases and some 2mm*10mm flat rod.
I cannot get a connected weld at right angles or flat edges.
I have used both 1.6mm rods and 2.5mm rods 6011 and 6013 for this.
But the weld works with bead break up/gaps when practicing straight lines and puddles but will not penetrate and weld both materials together. If I try to heat for longer the round 1.8 melts/blows through whilst still not penetrating the 2mm base plate. Also on lower amps same happens/ no penetration. Lots of slag no connection.
Can any one help. Sometimes I may get a point that welds but only when i leave it for ages and half the job has heat flare. If I am arcing, is the tip supposed to be in the slag or just above it as if I have loads of slag/ inside it melts and if little slag tip is easily visible and distance is better but not welding.
The welds mostly just crack off when tapped.
Any thoughts?
