rubber flat belt

right, this r and a lathe just will not run properly on a balata type belt or leather belts either. they slip, wont tension if I try, just stretch and even with belt dressing on them the first sign of load on the part and the belts slip again.

I want to try a rubber belt, but don't know where to get one, I can get belts for myford ml7 but don't know what size they are. I need a 18mm wide belt, length isn't too much of an issue as I can just alter where the motor will sit when I make the table to account for the length.

I sat down and worked out the ratios of the various pulleys between the motor and headstock, and it works out that the motor will spin the head stock at the same speed without the other pulleys, when I can get it to grip and to be honest I just want it to work so I can use it to turn dia on non critical jobs when the more accurate chester is laid up with a job in it

Try a cheap car poly v belt. With a belt drive the amount of wrap is very important, a cunningly positioned idler pulley works wonders.

car timing belt sounds a good idea, cant use a v belt as in fan belt types as the headstock is for flat belts, will see if I have a timing belt in the shed from my escort, think I do

X2 for trying a Poly v belt,The rubber V side should grip pretty well.

right well I don't have a timing belt, well I do but its been cut so useless. will nip to the motor factors and get a v belt to try. need to make the table for it first as my tension system is just going to be the motor bloted to a base that hinges on the edge of the table, so essentially gravity will keep tension on the belt

slim, I have but 24 quid is more than I want to spend just to find out they slip too. if I try with a normal rubber belt and it works I will probably buy a proper belt, but if it slips with a rubber belt too and proper tension I need to look into converting it to a better system

Both mine &my friend have betalon belts had them for years they will slip if you take Big cuts on the students but otherwise good

I wont be taking big cuts. only got a 1/6hp motor, and that has a built in overload that isn't the best, I have to have a 24v fan pointed at it to keep it cool enough to run without tripping.

mind you I don't take big cuts on the chester either, even though it is capable of bigger cuts I just don't like doing it

A poly v belt the wide multi ribbed type you see on serpentine drives. I don't think a v belt would be any good!
