RSJ / Steel beam sizes

I am looking at getting 2 RSJ or beams for my garage, I have no fixed plan as yet but i was thinking 14" deep and 8" wide by 6 meters long they do not have to be new, Are those sort of sizes anything near standard in industrial use? They are way over spec for the use but i have a reason for the size.

We have just used a similar size for some houses we are working on. 6 metres will be no problem and the size we used was approx 350mm x170. Steel suppliers we regularly use is AJN, Parkers or I.M.S any of those or your nearest steel stockist should be able to help.

356 x 171 is an available size of universal beam. Might be hard to find used at the lengths you require. I just looked on the Parker Steel website. for a 6m length of 356x171 45kg/m you're looking at £413.24 + VAT + delivery and it's a weight of 270kg. So you'll be looking at over a grand for 2 beams if you go for new and you'll need some sort of lifting gear to unload and/or put the beams into place.

If it helps there is a seller on ebay in Dudley called 5defender who has RSJs, dare say that you will find what you need in Wolvo.

those are pretty big beams! I guess any size that's readily available is standard. As a builder the most common sizes I use are 6 and 8" deep. Occasionally 10 or 12" but usually that's for long spans.

Being as i am a bit mad i want to have the top of the beam level with my upper floor height and have about 5"s hanging below, Plan is to weld on joist hangers to fix the wooden joists.

I want a hoist and roller to move engines in and out and also thinking of making some sort of bolt on bracket for rotating the empty car shell on, Just an idea to make best use of space and access.

If you don't have an abundance of labour, would be worth hiring a genie hoist to put those in.
Whats the access like at your property ? Is it a private garage or commercial ? Do you have access to a forklift or swing shovel etc?
Only asking as if you get anything from the big boys (usually cheaper) then you would need to be able to offload at your end
(unless its last drop and you drag it off ........ahem...

Its a private but with loads of access at the back i can normally get plenty of labour with mates and neighbours, But a genie can be so much better than hand-drolics..We have used stacked pallets a few times back when we were young and fit

Pallets, scaffold towers... been there , done all that. Like you say.... ok when young and fit...... I think our best in the past was a 1 ton beam through a hole in the side of the loft, with a crane feeding it through the hole onto rollers, with a manitou supporting the end outside whilst they moved the strops . We had to acro prop the first and second floor ceilings for that one. A few squeaky bum moments on that one, twas bloomin hot up there too . Managed to get it in place though. Funniest bit was the homeowner ( who was up there taking pictures for posterity) managed to put his size 9 through the ceiling. Oh how we laughed
