Out with the young today for a run a along the 69 to Hexham / garden center / riverside park , came to leave the garden center starts the car and warnings galore . DSC off HD on light on for Low range air suspension inactive and no lights , transmission failure quite a collection really . Now I've had spurious warnings before but they usually sort them selves out , I didn't fancy the dual carridge all the way back at 20 mph so a short drive confirmed it wasn't in low range but it wouldn't change up till about 3000 rpm so the usual stop start a few times to see if it would clear it's self ended in a no go ! . Now I know it's got no mechanical issues so I resorted to the mechanical version of IT ( turn it off turn it on ) no tools in the truck other than a 30" bar for the wheels so couldn't disconnect the battery so I pulled all 5 60 amp fuses in the glove box and a few others with anything to do with anything .So key ignition on start .............................. starts as normal no warning lights suspension raises lights on , quick drive on the estate through the gears so riverside park quick ice cream and home .
I now consider myself a master at diagnostics

Used to get a similar intermittent fault in one of the Octavias I had in the past.
Full Disco Light show and the added benefit of dial needles swing all over the place.
Loads of errors in the ECU log.
It started driving along one of the gravel roads in the Kielder.
Found that diving hard over a speed bump could set it off and stop it.
Garage thought it was a intermittent earth behind the dash.
Fixed it for good by selling the car...

Never had any similar problems with the 200TDi Discoverys,
just plenty of welding.

We’ve had our Disco 2 for over 10 years now, but are looking to replace it. Trouble is finding something as capable.

Had disco 2 for 11 years before the RR with a brief affair with an Audi A4 in between To be honest it was trouble free , usual general maintenance a coil pack and front prop joint iirc a very universal vehicle indeed and sad when it went .

It was Jap import and fully loaded 4.0 V8

quick wash this evening , think it was just playing up as it's been neglected of late ! not bad for 18 years old .A good clean inside tomorrow .

Most likely just low voltage 'spike', the severity can be measured by the amount of time it takes the infotainment screen to get back to where it should be after starting.
Don't leave the interior lights or radio on for too long while you're cleaning it! Much more pleasurable to drive than any deafener - on any surface.

I went from D2 to D3 6 years ago, didn't regret it, did regret selling the D3 a few years later, nothing since has compared to it

In reality, the L322 doesn't have many electrical defects, there are some issues caused by low voltage - which can affect any vehicle, one of the oddest I've come across is low battery capacity causes DSG gearboxes (VWG) to lose gearbox adaption settings and TC lockup is hit & miss - but restores itself after >20 mins driving... Like most vehicles, some oddities can be cleared by leaving well alone for a few minutes, particularly after a power disconnect - also applies to other 'premium' vehicles.

One of my Sons has my previous L319 - owned from new, I put 155k miles on it, a few in-warranty issues but nothing that stopped me driving it. Personally I'd be wary of a 3.0TDV6 that has low miles or incomplete dealer service history - purely due the the issue with spun shells / snapped cranks that seem to have either of those factors in their history. The 2.7 is nails.

I'd be wary of any big diesel engine that's not done many miles on average each year. Particularly if it has emissions stuff.

Interesting anecdote, I had a colleague who'd been looking into an alternative power plant for a hydrofoiling boat. I can't remember what it originally was (but a marianised version of something else). Anyway the only diesel engine that they could find that had the power to weight and stood a chance of being marianised was the 4.4TDV8. They bought a couple off Ford for development purposes with Ford saying they'd be happy to supply more if it did what they wanted. They spent a great deal of time and money testing these engines, the main concern was that most automotive engines are only designed to run at full power for 5-10% of the time whereas this boat was running at 90% of full power 90% of the time. Anyway after all the testing they concluded, with a few tweaks because of the marine environment, yup these engines would be perfect. Go back to Ford to sign a multimillion pound deal for some engines, nope sorry, we can't keep up with LRs demand so no can do .

It's an interesting anecdote because it shows just how under stressed the big V8s are which is why they tend to last much longer.

As has been said here and I know theoretically it doesn’t make that much sense but with my 2006 td6 I had similar issues and it was cured after somewhat sceptical my changing the “good” battery for a brand new one. Bosch silver I think it was.

roblane65: They do seem very sensitive to a voltage dip, as has been said a few times. Hopefully that's your problem fixed but might be a new battery time, come the cold weather.

I was in the same situation, went from a D2 to the L322 when the chassis rotted out. I've been very impressed with the L322 - so far its done everything I've asked of it & seems to be just as capable as the D2. Mine is a real mixed-use workhorse, gets used stop/start around town, motorway mileage-muncher, towing and as a mobile toolbox. I also do a fair amount offroad with it - not crazy bogging but its been on a few offroad sites where the air suspension has been given a good flex and the TC given a good workout up some stuff that defenders were also spinning and scrabbling on. decent set of all-terrains and its amazing what it clambers up & through. and all of this in heater leather sofas and aircon! main downside is they are rather wide so some tight stuff offroad calls for a mirror scuff and careful line up.
100% reccommend a test drive in one - see if you like it. Mine's the 3.6l tdv8 - much cheaper than the 4.4l and I've not noticed it being underpowered in the slightest.

Due to my predominantly short weekday journeys, I've 'invested' in an AGM Autostop rated battery for my L322 without BMS, no spurious happenings or need for a battery disconnect to restore normal operation of any system despite liberal use of the FBH timer through winter, the standard (i.e. fitted at build) Lead-Calcium battery doesn't like deep discharge nor being charged at low temperatures. My L319 also had the same battery technology but was used every day. A lot.

Had a new battery on it ( varta special some thing wasn't cheap ! ) when I getting spurious warnings last year in the cold snap mind the battery on was 9 years old , sticker courtesy of LR , and no issues since yesterday , I had been told the tronics like the battery to be be tip top , so i'm hoping it was just showing it's displeasure at no pampering been no sign of any issues today but doesn't get run regularly through the week but when it's out it's usually decent run . We'll see .

Try one. I didn't like autos until I drove a D4 then bought a 3.6TDV8 and subsequently a 4.4TDV8. The 3.6 wasn't lacking in power but the 4.4 is noticeably more so, also cruises better with an 8spd box.

I'd never owned an auto until about 5 years ago, I wouldn't go back to a manual now.
