rpm tachometer app?

I have one of those chinese laser tachos & it's a very useful little tool. I use it for setting the max rpm on lawnmowers - most mowers have the max rev set too low, an extra few revs transforms the mower making so much better to use!

Make sure you remove the battery when you are not using it! There is no off switch & the battery will drain if you leave it fitted.

For the more computer literate among us...is there an app for my phone that could accuratly read rpm on a milling machine?

Wouldn't it be easier to fit a digital tacho' permanently to the machine? Or get an analogue contact one and use it on the drawbar on top of the spindle (Do I recall correctly you have a horizontal mill with a knuckle head?)

A strobe is often the best thing though, I had trouble with reflective sticky tape flying off on industrial centrifuges, and magnets would do the same thing, except they wouldn't stick to stainless in the first place. We did use proxy sensors on the drive shafts though and they were quite effective, if a bit fiddly to set up in some applications where the shafts got hot and changed the distance enough to throw it out of kilter...

Must be using bad tape then. I use reflective tape on a daily basis on anything between 200 and 20,000 RPM. Strobes do work but to get a much more accurate speed reading you need to use a tacho.

It was on stainless steel in a very steamy and oily environment. The tape was the proper stuff though. The tachos we used weren't cheap ebay jobs though, they were expensive bits of kit. Our other problem was that the radius the tape was stuck on was relatively large so huge g forces involved

I think your problem is the stainless will be reflecting as well, confusing the tacho. I found a few turns of black leccy tape solved the problem

I managed to get my hands on the reflective tape they use on hard hats, its a hell of a lot stickier, better reflection and is designed to withstand oil and grease for sometime. I think 3m make it but it could be special order as the stuff I have is pre cut in strips that fit nicely on a hard hat and fell into my locker at a previous place of employment.
