rover p6

hi i'm dave. iv'e had a rover p6 for a couple of years now and i'm just about to start welding the sills. i'm new at this, but looking forward to it. is there anyone else out there at the moment restoring a p6?

i need to repair some floor pan, patch inner sill, replace most of the outer sill and effect some repairs to close the sill and rot in the rear wheelarch which i believe will be tricky.

what other cutting equipment woiuld yoiu recommend other than an angle grinder? i dont have a compressor.

Put some pics up mate of your P6. Probably the last Real Rover made. I had a few but forget a lot about them. Brilliant ride as I remember.

Tricky one - a tool question not really covered by any area apart from the most general forum. Wouldn't that be the brew room? Prudes!

I tend to use only an angle grinder for cutting, but some of the other guys have fancy things like plasma cutters, reciprocating saws, and various air powered devices. The angle grinder will do everything, but some of the other devices might save a little time.

Is panel supply OK for the P6? Can make life so much easier when you can just cut out an old panel and weld a new one in (that's how bodyshops operate). Patching takes ages!

There Are Good Panels Available From Jr Wadhams, Though A Little Pricy. I Bought 2 New Inner Sills And Just Learning To Mig Weld. I Will Take Some Photos Over The Weekend And Post Them On The Projects Page.

I would also check under the rear seats.
I have rebuilt a few P6s all were V8 still one of the best rovers made.
The V8 use to rip the rear stabiliser bar from the boot floor.
Would like to see some pics.

Don't know if you've seen it already, but the previous-to-this-months (Issue 123;Spring 2007;on sale in March) issue of Classics Monthly has a 3 page photo spread on replacing P6 inner sills. May be useful if you need some assistance/inspiration as their seems good photos of the floorpan/sill and rear arch areas. PM me if you need the article and I can send it to you.

thanks for the replies. i started a thread on the projects page and a few photo's. i got the article about replacing the sills. mine aren't that bad. i think i may get away with patching them. i'm not sure how to cut into awkward little places though. and how to get a clamp in. i'll post all updates on the project page from now on. i'm sure i'll be picking your brains again soon!
