Rotavator oil seal

Hi chaps, doing a bit of an overdue overhaul of our old Howard E series 70" rotavator. The chaincase guard was worn through and I thought the case had worn through also. Turns out chaincase is fine but looks like the bottom oil seal is gone. Trouble is can't get parts for them anymore. I've found a generic supplier online but don't have right size. Size being, Id 2.750", od 3.750", width 0.625".

Would be grateful for any suggestions or advice, as I've never been inside rotavator before.

Thanks for that. Do you think 1/2" thick is okay? The one I have is 5/8 thick

The widest seal on that page would need a 1/8" packer, or would sit 1/8" clear of one face of the mounting location.
Realistically if it were to be fitted it would need to go to the bottom of the counterbore.
That, could, help IF, the shaft was worn where the original seal was located, but, in that case, you could use a "seal / shaft saver" AKA an SKF "speedi-sleeve"

as said just take the original seal down to a transmission or bearing suppliers and match it up with an imperial replacement seal job done

Would it be a bad idea to put grease into the chain case instead of oil? Just took the chain case off and it's a bigger job than I thought! Nut on gear wheel is 2 and 9/16" don't have tools that big!

u could put a 20mm hole in the chaincase and lubricate the chain regular with motorcycle chainspray then put a grommet in the hole

it wouldn't last too long, the grease would probably get thrown off the chain where as it will constantly pick up oil as it turns

Parts are still available for them, I rebuilt one fora farmer last year, he had new seals, a couple of new cups (the ones that fit into each other to keep general dirt out). Not sure where he got the parts but the local agri factor - Flintshire farm parts - is usually his first port of call.

Interesting Andy and good to know. Will have to do a bit more enquiring. When you say cups do you mean the shallow dish round the main rotor shaft at both ends? Because mine are also damaged.
