Just getting the bits together:

Rough idea. Needs to fold down to go into an estate car like the commercial ones you buy. Fire up the CAD!

Will hopefully pick up a bunch of 4 or 5" dia heavy duty, rubber tyred rollers tomorrow.

A suggestion: Design it round your wheelbarrow. I've Scheppach one and I'd estimate that between 5 and 10% of the sieved matter misses the barrow, partly because the drum is longer than a usual garden barrow.

Be mulling over the problem of what to do if the circumference of the fan housing does not equal an integer number of chain pitches.

I think it will need to be on a slope for the material to go through it, so one set of rollers will have side thrust applied to them.

It might be better to say that whatever rollers are used, they need to resist both uplift and downwards forces. Most of the big, commercial ones do not have top rollers (look at pictures of Raptor trommels).

Chain - you just stick spacers under the chain brackets.

And operative word "big". Garden one unlikely to be heavy enough to stay stable under drive, and especially when a shovel-full of soggy stuff gets chucked in and it does half a rotation before breaking up and falling down.

Just tack a spiral of flat bar through it to take material through - then it can all sit nicely flat and stable.

OK, a bit of autistic license on the roller diameter D, supposed to be the same!

Rather than use the actual drum there are two flanges that might work as ends on the "cylinder". Linked together with studding.

Mess around with a chain drive or just drive a roller(s)?

dont use the lipped version as it will cause you a fair few annoying problems to deal with

depending on what yuor doing length and support is the important part

you can even do them out of plastic

I've seen a few of these homemade ones around here.
And they all seem to get plugged up with moist topsoil.
Most here seem to be employed screening topsoil.

Why not make it easier to build, make it square with 4 bolt on screens ?

Only need to roll rings for the wheels to ride on, and the square shape would
impart more tumbling, to keep the screen blinding to a minimum.

the problem with square is it sufferes with hard drop downs which can bounce your tromel you see that with the cement mixer when its spinning and the cement drops off the mixers internal bars

I made a garden sieve by lining a shopping trolley with finer mesh and bolting a motor to it with an off-set weight. It worked fantastically well, until I robbed the casters off it then it didn't work at all.

With the screen blinding going on, running some bowling balls thru it would unplug it.
Sometimes you want to shake things up a bit.
Your trommel should'nt be travelling at warp speed either, even with a round one, you want the material to only climb up the side, and then fall.
