It lives again! But strangely the speed control isn't working??
I replaced the hall probe and it now runs at full speed fwd and reverse without shutting off, as it has a 2 speed gearbox I'll call that a victory, I've never used one with variable speed before anyway!

And with a magnifying glass I think I know what is wrong with the speed control, there were no visible markings on the old probe so I went with a bipolar switch but the faint markings on the old probe are now visible and a Google search shows its a latch...
Iirc they need to be sat on a decent bit of steel to work. New one at work won’t go if clamped to anything less than 6mm and not allways then the old one will grip suddenly on 3mm and go regardless as long as the magnet is on
On thinner stuff I use a thick piece of steel plate underneath to give it something to grab!
