If memory serves coach enamel was the paint of choice back in the day and yes most likely hand painted.

whats wrong with base coat silver then black then top coat with clear 2k lacquer or are u after the original look as the puritans would scowl at 2k

No, I'm just looking for a good finish really. My issue with spraying is bleed through as there are some very tight corners. The jury was out on the rather expensive masks according to reports so not tempted with them. I will be spraying COB 2k then adding the black which appears to be satin finish so burying it in clear wouldn't work. I'm going to have a go with some 3M fine line and see what happens but I feel hand painting is going to be a lot less agg'

Those masks are misleading and not particularly good.
I say misleading because they only work if you put the silver on first followed by the black. When the wheels were originally made they were painted black and then the silver went on top.
The biggest problem in getting a lasting finish is the area where the wheel centre meets the rim. Soaking the rims in a tank of paint remover (or blasting the paint off) and then soaking them for a long time in a tank of rust remover should do it. Blasting on its own will not get rid of the rust sandwiched in the joint.
In the past I have sprayed them with a high solid satin black and then painted the silver in smooth hammerite with a brush. Masking up to spray the silver is very time consuming but will probably provide a better result.

fortunately the dry seams are good David, in fact the rims are good but just look like they went to sunday school class to be painted. This years restoration is now done so ill probably do a complete job next winter when i do the refinish of the body. For now, they were sprayed in cob silver quite well but went pete tong when the black was added so i want to clean up the lines a little.

I thought they were satin black originally but have seen them matt and gloss and everything in between.
I suppose the one's I remember most were on my Fords and MGB's, cars that were far from new when I owned them so the wheels had probably been freshened up with whatever paint the previous owner had at the time.
