Rolls Royce have now received the funding for a new generation of Small Modular Reactors. This could bring 40,000 jobs to the UK. Good quality engineering jobs. Unlike all the wind turbines which are mostly built in Denmark. We have paid them billions

Also Rolls Royce are picking up well after the aviation industry was decimated by COVID. They have won quite a few new contracts including repowering the USAF B52 bomber fleet!

Thats a bit rubbish for the two football pitches each takes up. Theres 116 wind turbines off the coast of Worthing, ok takes quite a bit of space but is 400mw of power.

£400m is nothing compared to the predicted cost of £2 billion, each. £32 billion for the equivalent of 4800 wind turbines.

Kram,

wind farms are always rated as nameplate, actual power is half to one third of that (quarter for onshore). Also they cannot be compared as they are uncontrollable and intermittent. Conventional plant usually give near 100% when and as required.
There's no comparison between part time power and proper power plants.

The amount the government says it will fund is not a lot, they committed over double that to plant trees.

A power station that size runs 24hrs a day at full capacity.
Over a year it generates the same power as the 2 biggest windfarms in the World which cost over £6 billion to build!

Yes I am aware wind farms are part time and the figures can be considered peak power, which will not often align to demand. I think nuclear has a big part, I just dont think we are getting value for money. I will admit I thought the peak wind power per turbine was much, much less. 3MW from a few spinny blades on a stick!

The greens wont let nuclear happen without great expense and every option with private involvement will be a blank taxpayer funded cheque. Delays and budget expansions at every opertunity!

As the above screenshots, if the world goes ahead with the green plans of electric cars we will be needing a few SMR's every town, london would need many.

To put the government funding in perspective. They gave Rolls Royce - a World class engineering firm - £200 million or so.
How much did they spend on track and trace?
Also there are US based Fusion start up companies with just a concept getting over $2 billion in funding for something that might not even work!
The technology Rolls Royce is using is well proven and will deliver.

Obviously. But it will be spent on R+D and create loads of good quality British engineering jobs. What's the harm in that?
Got to be better than throwing billions to Denmark.
