Rolling tapered curves

I have been asked about making a sculpture featuring a cider barrel.
When dragons were a problem in the Wye Valley* some blokey hid in a barrel and shot the dragon with an arrow and saved Mordiford from some hideousity.

Anyway, I have a fine set of slip rollers courtesy of S410man.

I need to make the round hoops that hold the staves together, and some of them need to have a slight taper
Is it possible to make this kind of thing using these?
I was thinking of using 30 or 50 x3mm strip.
if not has anybody got any other ideas.

Hello Chunkolini,

how big a barrel, that I think would determine the width of the hoops.

I have some beer barrels (True brewers barrel size, i.e. 36 gallon) and it has six hoops, each end hoop is 2 3/4", the next two are 2" and the centre two are 2 1/2".

The difficulty is ideally you want to form a cone rather than a hoop, but I can't imagine the coopers cutting a curved strip from sheet so they must have bent the strip edgewise first before rolling it? Do you think your roller will be strong enough to first roll the strip edgeways?

Ah! so is it make the trip curved on it's edge first?
My rollers might not manage that but I have other means at my disposal.
Ar least up to 30mm wide.
I have access to dozens of hoops off barrels but they are very old, thin and rusty.

As piman has said, ideally you want to start with a curved strip, develop the curve, and bend the flat on edge first... then roll the cone.

It wont be much of a curve, but doing it this way first will make life much easier for you.

As you roll the curved flat through, you'll want to roll and pull it around as it goes through, so the portion between the rolls is square on. Then you end up with a nice tapered ring.
