I've been wanting to make myself a rolling mill for forging damascus for quite a while just not quite as big as that I'd love see it working in the flesh
I started my working life in British Steel now Corus. One of the jobs I was allocated was to check the legs of the rolling mills. When the billet, slab or whatever passes through the rolls the whole housing stretches. They have to allow for it when calculating the reductions / dimensions. So with time the possibility of a fatigue crack increases. Therfore they have to be checked as a massive crack could have disatrous consequences.
They are water cooled so underneath is a sump that contains some of the water (a lot of it evaporates as you can imagine). I had to get into the sump to check the legs with the dye pen. So they give me a pair of waders. The upto the armpit variety. So down into this goes I armed with the cans of dye, cleaner and chalk. Once down there someone decides to send a red / white hot slab through. The noise is deafening and you can seriously feel the heat. What do I do.....duck down..........thus filling the waders with water from the inside.........now I cant move and Im surrounded by a gang of blokes ******* themselves laughing.......... There wasnt enough room down there to take off the waders so I had to be lifted out by the crane.
I still dont know if it was a mistake or a practical joke
