hi all, i am really struggling to find some roll cage tubing. as far as i'm aware it needs to be 12g but the tube im finding on ebay etc is around £12 a meter which seems steep. help me!!! cheers lee
All depends on who's regulations you are running to. On alrc regs you can use steam pipe or cds tube. No which one i'll use and it won't be cds tube, it deforms to dissipate the energy of the roll.
Seen people using used scaffold tube, i used what was bs1387. Rolled 120ft down a hill bouncing back up off the top of the cage about 3ft. Only damage to vehicle was drivers door because it came open and puncture in the nearside front wheel. CDS tube would have deformed before the landing on the roof.
TBH Cds is more for internal presure integrety rather than external presures, No expert on cars or roll cages just remmber being asked to build one once and passing the job on.
On the boilers all the tubes are BS no. sold certified, then everything has to be made to a reconised design, preped and welded, inspected at each stage. before being signed off, I dont know if your building a cage for comercial gain the same applys.
The cage on our land rovers are inspected by 2 scrutineers for welding, design, bend radii and tube type. The builder of the cage has to say what material has been used, 4mm holes have to be drilled in sections to check for wall thickness.
thanks for the replies guys. i have phoned up a company called FWB quite a large stockholder and they dont do 12g tube (think about 2.5mm thick). oddball sounds like you have been in a scrape or two might use scaffold now!! the tube will be used as a space frame to for the engine in the boot
Sorry Luke scaffold tube is allowed in ALRC, even galv but you need to clean the galv off. Know this as rollcage scruntineer's own cage is made out of new scaffold tube. It more than passes the minimum strengh anyway.
Having said that i use blue band tube in all the cages that i've made as it bends nicer and welds easier.
Read 3.1 the specs for scaffold exceed those so you can use it. But you have to say what tube you use on the log booking process, you might have to supply a spec sheet for the material used.
No third trialers owners motor, or was till the front pulley departed company from the crank. That was another nice job i got making the exhaust pipe to go from Disco 200tdi turbo to 2.5nad exhaust. 1/2 inch clearance on bulkhead, but bulkhead wasn't modified.
Just sold the green trialer and started to make the replacement with a few mods to it, problem now is somebody wants that now so my new one is going to get put back abit.
