Roll of coins...

New to mig welding and welding in general, a few questions. Welding flat, what is the proper "angle of attack" for the gun? Also, I have a hard time seeing the bead, #10 shade mask. How light should I go? I see some nice welds (not mine) looks liek a roll of coins on its side, how is that acchieved? Should I be making tight circles with the wire as I move along?

hi,

torch vertical above the plate then tilt back to about 70 degrees, still being 90 degrees either side, if that makes sense.

For the mask I prefer a shade 8, but I don't go up to 150A much at that, generally less than 80 - 90Amps.

Some of the 'nice' welds have been done with TiG and I'm not sure but that may need a scrolly type of movement to do that...I've never done any. Someone did mention a super-duper Mig set the other day, does some fancy pulse stuff I think.

The shade you use is determined by the amperage you use. I've seen a table somewhere...

If you're not working in conditions with good ambient light, that makes a difference too.

Did you say you were using flux core somewhere else (TCU?) because you'll see less with that than you will with solid wire and gas no matter what shade you use.

The roll of coins thing, usually you need to be looking at fairly thick material to get that with a MIG.
