Rod disaster

Hi guys this will be my 1st post
I use an old sip 140 welder and use Nexus rods and have no problems with them
Recently i bought a box of 2.5 6013 arcweld Lincoln Electric rods
Which I am realy struggling to light and when I do it's just a disaster I have no control over the arc resulting in a crappy weld
Browsing this forum i saw a post suggesting that Buzz box's with ac connections require specificate rods
I don't know if this machine is a Buzz box or if it is ACorDC
I am enclosing a picture of the workings in the hope of some help with my dilemma many thanx in anticipation Little Harry

That looks like mains in on the right (primary) and low volts ac out on the left (secondary).

Needs to have a rectifier to be DC, can't see one so as above it's AC.

Just scratch it around until you get it going correctly, then weld.

You'll need rods suitable for AC welding.

Were the rods new or have they sat on the shelf for some time?

Also I'd give that welder a blow out with an airline, lots of dust in there...

6013 are good for ac buzz box, I think you just need to crank up your output current because the choke in the picture looks all the way into the transformer core and that's means you're using the current lowest end of the welder capabilities.
You are doing to need at least 80A to do something with this welder

Yes I have cleaned the insides,
the choke Just happened to be In that position, the rods were new ,
Which rods would you guys recomend for a AC Buzz box many thanx L H

See above for that answer. Personally I haven't bought new rods for years, still using my OK mildtrode rods from years ago...
Buzzboxes work reasonably well, but have a tendency towards sticking at lower amps (and being noisy), but I've done some excellent work with the one my dad bought us 40 years ago.

One thing worth checking, you may have done this, but does the choke slide in/out of the transformer when the ampage knob is turned?

Also your stated location in your profile is the UK, which makes it a impossible for someone to offer physical help.

Now if you were 5 mins down the road, I might offer to pop around and help you out, possibly bring some different rods for you to try out.....no local location...no help..............

As it's an old machine it's time to check all the basics such as the welding cable connections are good and tight for torch and earth.....as above check the ampage control is working (rough guide: crank the amps up and you'll get a bigger spark).
