Rocket Stove Rust Prevention Ideas

Hello All, At the end of each year at work we do a secrete santa gift swap. This year I have been allocated a work mate with a nice outdoor area and I was thinking I could knock up a rocket stove to allow him to make use of the constant eucalypt deadfall in his backyard and have some nice outdoor heating in the winter months.
The set budget for the gift swap is $20, so I am not going to have much change left after a quick trip to my local steel supplier. Unfortunately, I do not have any heat proof paint lying around the shed, nor will my restricted budget extend to stainless. I would love some recomendations or ideas for coating/treating mild steel to at least minimise corrosion if not prevent it entirely.

Paint it any colour you want, because after the first firing, any paint that's around the business end of the 'Rocket Stove' will be burnt and peeling off.

And you can tell if he's used it....

Build it out of 4.0 mm+ it'll last for a years.....

you will not create a heater for the outside but you can create a cook top whilst 3mm is ample enough for this design

I made my first rocket stove today. Dead easy to make and a great project for welders of all experience. I'll give it a test run later and post more pics.

this is the barrel version

no bottom to it just a good bed of ashes 4 3x2s in criss cross pattern that got the shed wall too hot to touch by hand

as goes for a large heating the cost is alot more than you think

however if you did a hybrid brick built rocket stove feed area with a cook top you would gain heat from that rather well but it wouldnt be enough like the incinerator bin

My experience of rocket stoves, even ones that don't burn as efficiently as they should still get hit enough to burn heat resistant paint off...

I found the best rust prevention was to spray it with high smoke point cooking oil after it had died out but was still hot (not glowing)...like seasoning a pan

Or let it rust gracefully. That's what I've done with my homemade chimenea and it looks - used.
