Road racing coming back to public rds.

Just been speaking to a mate, the New Brighton stages are ran because the land is technically private (but still owned by the council).. Which I think relates to a post above.

Never known a public road, to be privately owned by the council.

The way that the MSA is going about things I would be very surprised if any racing actually takes place on public roads, they are doing their best to stop it over here!

We have enjoyed public road rallies for years in NI but the general feeling amongst the rally community over here is that the MSA want motorsport confined to race circuits. They are continually introducing more regulations making it difficult, sometimes impossible to run an event legally. Some of the regs make sense but most are daft. This has also substantially increased the cost of running an event, which also means increased entry fees for competitors. This, coupled with the cost of insurance means competitors can't afford to rally. Several events this year have been cancelled, some due to lack of funding, some due to lack of licensed officials to run the event but mostly due to lack of entries.

The Republic of Ireland is in a worse state. Due to some rally accidents involving spectators, some fatal, there have been some big insurance payouts. The first few events in 2017 didn't run because they couldn't get any insurance co to cover them. They finally got one insurance company to provide cover, which is quite expensive. I think there is a 300 euro increase per event on top of last years premium! They have said that if there are any claims made they will pull out of the deal effectively stopping all motorsport, not just rallying! If the competitors cause any property damage they have to pay the first 5000 euro of the repair bill. This has drastically affected entries - the Galway rally normally gets 140-150 cars plus a reserve list. This year they struggled to get 90!

There's quite a lot like that, roads in parks, that sort of thing. Comes under council control rather than highways.

What about the Great Orme in Llandudno?, I went to watch the RAC rally run a stage round there.

Again privately owned AFAIK--- rally gb used it 2015.

Aberdare Park is a council owned park with racing allowed, quite unique although I never rode there for some reason. Did race at New Brighton, Olivers Mount, Isle of Man and most of the Irish circuits in the 60s / 70s

Using a greeves ? I used to help spanner for a lad Roy ?? who had a racing greeves. when I was 13 ish in late 60's
another bloke I used to help had a greeves frame with a yamaha td2 engine for sand racing at wallasey.

I did a sprint probably 25 yrs ago at Wallesy - interesting sliding towards a road kerb at some speed in a Westfield . . . as was discovering the gear change on the type 9 had decided it didn't really like racing changes in Liverpool (worked fine everywhere else) - the missed gear rather unsettled the car . . . not the best event for me that day. Although the Red Bull girls handing out free cans were . . . nice ;-) (never tried the drink so . . .)

Wondered then how they managed the closed road thingie - council owned explains it.

Yep I remember vividly a norton coming in to the pits end roundabout not making the banked over braking bit, not wanting to slide into the kerb, so he threw it upright and decided to go straight on over the kerb and onto the grass that was in a dip the other side of the pavement, unfortunately where a family of four had just set up their picnic (seems crazy now that they were allowed to) anyway the norton suddenly appeared over the bank the rider could do nothing about it and went straight through the middle of them, across the tartan blanket and over the picnic basket !! though he had a massive shock he never fell off, he pulled himself together revved up and rejoined the race!!
WAS VERY FUNNYto see but could have been so serious...

Norm, Raced the Greeves mid 60s, mostly rode a Norton 500 then mid 70s a Yamaha 350 and finished on a Honda. Currently only ride the Greeves in classic race parades, too old to risk racing seriously. Will be showing one of the Greeves at Stafford Show next weekend. Greeves 246

I remember a problem we had with the greeves, when we fitted a modified squish head and could not get the mixture right, on the plug, it appeared to be too weak even with the biggest jets we had, turned out we where getting perfect combustion just in the squish bit,
and needed to take the head off to see the mixture.

Was anyone watching the F4 race earlier today and witnessed the horrific accident involving Billy Monger and Patrik Pasma? I've been involved in motorsport a long time as a competitor & a marshal & it's one of the worst I've seen. When it happened I literally felt sick & feared the worst but luckily both drivers survived, though one is seriously injured. Details here inc video but be warned it's shocking -

It's a testament to the strength of the carbon fibre tubs of these cars that they survived this accident - sometimes the MSA get it right!

On the news this morning, the lad driving the car into the stationary one, has unfortunately lost both lower legs, but he could easily have lost a lot more after viewing the accident.
