RivNuts

Anybody knows how to make a rivnut gun or insert rivnuts without buying the commercial tool.

Buggers want me to pay $100+ for the gun + mandrel.

I read a few years ago on some board of a way to insert rivnuts without special tools.

Try using a bolt the same thread as what you are inserting a washer and a nut. Hold the bolt and tighten the nut a little bit of grease behind the washer should be enough to let it slip.

I'll try it - thanx Sam. For the life of me can't picture how it's gonna work but by golly I'll try.

There is a bit of info on how rivnuts are installed and some tools to do it here.(from a WelderPaul post)

Sam's method should work perfectly.

The tooling you can buy is just a fancier way of doing it, by adding handles and things

I remembered reading about it on Locostbuilders.co.uk and when I logged on and try to register they expected me to call them back to confirm registration. WTF - luckily you guys came to rescue.

Normally use oner of the correct tools but on the odd occasion i havnt got it to hand, a peice of flat with a hole in, and a bolt, Put the bolt through the flat and into the rivnut, pull the end of the flat up slightly as you do the bolt up.
That helps keep the rivnut pushed down.

Re Locostbuilders.

The phone call thing is done with new members now because there was a real problem, maybe a year or so, ago with an individual setting up accounts and posting mega sick hard core p**n pictures. Serioulsy vile stuff that took days to get over if you were unfortunate enough to have seen it. He just wouldn't go away.
Since new members now have to make that one phone call, the problem is gone and Locostbuilders is generally a very cool place.

Just a little explanation of that, no more.

It works but I actually stripped my socket. I'm using the smaller rivnuts with 8mm head bolts.

The rivnut has deformed but still spins in the hole - I guess it's because I could'nt get a good enough grip anymore on the bolt.

Will figure sometihing out to remedy the situation.

Do it the way as mentioned on the x-eng site, that way the rivnut doesn't turn at all.

You do need to get the holes pretty accurate no matter which way you choose.
