Ive a pair pliers for M3,4,5 and 6 made by Bralo (Italian) very good make. They are cast, DON'T buy the pressed steel ones they are ****e.
While the large handled ones give more leverage, they never seem to fit in the space where you want the damn rivet nut to fit. The trick to using the smaller ones is not to adjust so the handles are wide apart, as the leverage is highest when almost closed.
Not cheap but do come up on ebay,so worth the wait. As BBB says use a nut and bolt until then, and use grease it makes life easier
You can put them in with a nut and bolt and a washer that are the same thread as the insert.
Screw the nut onto the bolt until there is enough thread showing to take the washer and the rivnut screwed on with just the tip sticking through.
Put the rivnut into the hole where you want it set.
Hold the bolt still with a ring spanner and use an open ended spanner to tighten the nut down, as the nut screws down it will compress the insert.
Be careful not to over tighten it as you will rip the thread out of the insert.
Or this article explains it better, with pics...

When it comes to Rivnuts I only buy the ones that are knurled, the work much better than the normal type.

Basically , will one of these do the job well http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/370683185169?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 or one of the larger long handled ones http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Masterfix...t=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item4d0ae1cf53 don't want overkill as the range needed would probably be no bigger than 8mm.
Just seen these as another option, supposedly half price http://www.amazon.co.uk/Laser-3736-...B3RO/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1364898924&sr=8-9 just want a decent tool that will do most jobs???
Cheers
Whatever you get make sure they are splined. The smooth ones don't grip. It's also worth noting the hole size is +3mm all bar one (M10 ISTR), If you buy 0.1mm under they are a little harder to push in the hole, but I find they don't spin as easily, A tack with the welder helps as well
Cheers, it was actually what they are made from most suitable for general use.
Yup, as Steve says anything above M6 and you need hands like a coal trimmers shovel.![]()
