Rivnuts

I can remember seeing a thread here about these a while back, I even found it.
A bit more info, on Amazon there are some cheap pop rivet style devices for applying these, I presume they are cheap and nasty, one was by 'Silverline' ho ho ho.

I have seen one by Memfast which did get a mention here, any good?, not going to be used a huge amount but I hate tools that let you down, and this could become a favourite occasional tool.

I am working on a project that involves frames made of box section, that may well need a few threaded holes along the top of them, these need to be discrete, they will be 1.8m up in the air.

I need a fixing that will not stand too proud of the surface, and can be put in easily. I was thinking of just tapping the holes but that is a faff and 3mm box wall is not really thick enough.

I have been on the memfast website http://www.memfast.co.uk/shop/Vprod1.asp?cat=2258005402 and these look just the ticket. And cheap, usually cheap and useful dont go in the same sentence.

So anybody used them?

The rivnut will stand proud of the box section by around 1.5mm (The top collar head bit). We normally countersink the underside of whatever is fixing ontop so it sits flush.

We use them fairly regularly - very handy. Our 'riveter' was around £125. Its been a good buy. There is a lot of force on the tool - especially with steel rivnuts. I don't imagine a cheap one will last very long. I'll have a look what make ours is tomorrow.

I'v recently used the 8mm ones for more secure fixing of a roof rack on an old truck, If you are only doing a few no tool needed,I just a strip of metal with 8mm hole at one end that I could hold to stop the rivnut turning while using a longer 8mm bolt with a nut run up the threads to nip the rivnut up, ,Sound job cheap, They even do rivnuts with a shallow countersunk head to be almost flush,
These are the ones I got from the biggest shop in the world!!

Countersink underneath?
I am going into box section, if I countersink the hole will I get a bit less of it sticking up? I think 1mm will be ok, though the less the better.

I may well be putting quite a few in and an excuse to buy new tools is always welcome, especially when I can add it on to my customers bill.

It made sense to me
Drill your hole in the box section as normal. Stick the rivnut in and squeeze it up with aformentioned shiny new riveter. Top of rivnut sticks up 1.5mm from face of box section.

Lets say your fastening flat bar to the box section...the flat bar will rock around ontop of the rivnut and not sit tight to the box section....we would normally countersink the underside of the flat bar so it sits over the rivnut and therefore sits flush on the box section.

A lot of people call these Avdels because they are a popular brand for them

Theres loads of different ones, make sure you get one to suit your material thickness aswell.

On some of them it is essential to get the hole accurate.

Wheres the faf with tapping the box chunko? Id say that was easier than putting in rivnuts.... drill the hole and tap in a cordless drill in low gear.

The place I used to work had a tool for them
It was a ratchet style with two handles
You could put in 10mm and 12mm rivnuts
I,m sorry i can,t think of name but it was a very robust
piece of kit

Wow They look amazing...I want some. They really work in a standard pillar drill? (haven't read all the site yet..)

Chunko - I've used Memfast, only a few 'flexi-nuts' which they don't seem to stock any more (not the rubber sort, these are like Rivnuts with legs like the screw fasteners, designed for thin fragile stuff like fibreglass). They were good and the tool they make isn't at all bad for the price, fine if you're only putting a few in. They were a really nice and helpful company to deal with, actually sent me samples of the nuts even though they weren't yet stocking them (and still don't!!!).

For fixing to box section, without the trouble of tapping, I use taptite screws
just drive them in with a cordless drill,

I use them on my machines, they put out a lot of vibration and the riv nuts seem to cope well.. I also whack some super glue on the threads just incase.
