Rivet sizes

Hello boys and girls.

I have had a search of the forum and the tinterweb and can't seem to find a conclusive answer.

How do I work out what length of pop rivet I need?

Example, riveting 2mm ally to 1.6mm steel tube (kit car floor), I will use 3.2mm dia (1/8") but how do I work out what length I need?

Obviously I need the thickness to be joined, plus a bit extra to allow the inner 'head' to dome out, but how much do I need?

An answer or a pointer in the right direction would be great

Edit - have found the answer

The spec is Dia x Max thickness, the actual rivet is a bit longer (obviously the stem is a lot longer)

So, a 3.2x9.5 rivet can join 9mm - I think

The above might not be totally true, as some places give the rivet size as the length of the body, and not the thickness.

Hi Sean - I'm no expert and I'm sure you'll get a more definitive answer but whenever I want rivets I find the type I want (and there are lots of different ones) and usually they tell you the min. and max. grip for each size. Have a look here

According to that chart you'd need 3.2 x 8mm which will grip between 3.5 and 5.5. or a 4 x 8mm which would grip between 3 and 5mm (Very annoying page - has no scroll bar!)

The seal will help stop any moisture ingress through the rivet into the steel tube.

Panel will also be bonded with silcone type stuff, to isolate it and seal it

I started on the G+T at about 6ish, plus a few Stellas with the curry, then back on the Gin.

Obviously, no work was done in the garage, too cold, although I did have a quick sweep up

As a rule of thumb with rivets (from avaition standards) the rivet must protrude a minimum of 1 1/2 times the diamater and be twice the diameter from the edge. Also not less then 3 times the dia apart.

But that's for ally and not sure if thats any good for what you want.

You will certainly have 'riveters wrist' if you put that many rivets in your kit car! W/A

What about a max spacing though?

I'm thinking of just doing them every inch or so, maybe 30mm.

And the floor panels will certainly be done with either lazy tongs or an air riveter
