The big money billionaire stuff holds no appeal, anything to big to drive/ sail yourself is not for me. A nice Swan 46 yacht would hold far more appeal to me.

I spent 18 months working in a sailing boat yard in Singapore, back when I was a backpacker, and the savings had ran out.
I'd never set foot on a yacht before, but the yard owner was desperate to have 'a white man' in the yard that he could get to do trusted jobs. It's hard to explain to the uninitiated, but the owner was American, and asians do not like to be told what to do by whiteys. It's a cultural thing, so he saw me as a man on the inside.....
I was totally green, clueless about anything maritime, but I slowly picked it up and built up a useful skill set. And I got on quite well with the local guys, after a few 'cultural' hiccups.
It was Singapore, anybody who has lived there knows the score.

Hey Migmac, would you ask your friend what HP the motor is, how he gets on with the "air floor", how long it takes to assemble, does it fit in a car boot, does if have any issues with the wake while on rivers or canals, and can it plane? I'm considering downgrading to something like this, it looks more manageable.
If anyone else has experience with a small setup like this I'd love to hear.

Canadian Canoe, mate of mine has one, he gets more use out of it than anyone else i know gets out of their big boats. Every trip is an adventure & it goes places 99% of other boats cannot.
Last years trip was a circumnavigation of Essex, Up the river Lea, various ditches with angry farmers, A 20 odd mile portage across to the Stour then down to Sudbury & on to the tidal Stour, then down the coast. Lots of wild camping & bonfires.
Plus it gets you fit

Hi everyone, a small update.
Your canoe ideas were probably the most practical, but I went with @Migmac's smaller boat and engine idea because I like SIBs. It's worked out well, fits in my 4x4's boot, and launches in 15 min. Not needing a trailer anymore lets me pick any slipway from boatlaunch.co.uk, so I can explore the county and see beautiful areas.
The 6hp engine planes easily with just me and just about manages with my young kids. It won't plane with the whole family, but some compromises had to be made. I keep wondering if a bit of engine and prop tuning could sort this

This one will get itself up out of the water, is quite quick, can travel a long way on a tank of fuel and has plenty of room for fishing rods. Won't fit in the back of the car, though. (?)
