Me too, just drill the taper out so it's parallel

Yes, bend it hot so it sticks out far enough for the rod to clear the exhaust, or find a non tapered ball joint and drill/ream the taper out of the arm. Lots of non tapered ball joints out there, or fit a rose joint instead.

I shall investigate to see if there would be room for that.

Welding it is no problem, I have an Rtech 180.

The problem is finding the threads to match the steering rod. It is a question of juggling parts, as I never noticed the taper was on the opposite side and thought it would easy enough to use all Landrover parts. All I would need to do is turn up a tapered boss to weld to the front steering arm on the spindle.

Bump steer will there, but better than the original set up, which had the steering arm pointing upwards, and was some horrible Anglia steering box clamped in place with grub screws. Hard to believe this car has been on the road since 1985.

Your fears are the same as mine, but this is normal build style for a Jago T bucket, and I plan to run a tubular crossmember between the top of the two shock ‘towers’ to add some stiffness. I will camouflage it as a badge bar.

I am not overly happy with the whole spindly front axle, may change it to a decent sized dropped I beam some day.

On beetles you can drill out the taper and press in a bush with a taper going the opposite way.

I have drilled and tapped, fitted a bush with the correct taper into hubs before now... As long as there is enough metal it will be fine. Why heat cycle it if you don't have to

I think pressing a bush in is the way I will go. With a decent washer on the nut side, so it can’t possibly slip out, I can’t see anything will go wrong.
