Folks.
My little Nissan van has a factory fitted reversing camera by the n/s rear door handle, just visible above the "2" in the reg plate like so:

It switches on automatically when the ignition is on and I engage reverse cog, and the dashboard screen switches displays from:

I've been pondering having cameras fitted to the van, and last Thursday's episode in the wagon has brought this into sharp relief, and was wondering if it would be possible to utilise the existing rear camera and convert it somehow by wiring in a recording device of some kind.
Thoughts or suggestions appreciated, even if it's a no-go and I'd be better having a "dedicated" system fitted. For further info, the image in the last shot is of the van reversed to within 6" of OH's Fiesta on the drive but the image is normally a wider angle. There's no windows in the rear doors so obviously an internal camera is out, but there's a wooden roof rack under construction made of some tasty 6x3/4 Iroko boards that will be mounted to the aluminium roof bars, and if needs be a camera could be fitted on the rear board above the doors. I'll be fitting a few extra work lights and rear lights up there anway so that's another option.
