I think the correct term is work clamp and work lead, but as long as everyone knows what you mean you can call them whatever you like.I suppose technically they are both named incorrectly, no idea what you could actually call it though

Some people advocate having the earth really close when welding on cars as there's a theory that this will minimise impact on electronic components, however I don't think there's any evidence to support that.
