Retrieving a stud

Hi,

Im looking for some advice on how to retrieve a stud or broken bolt.
I have had a go.

The nut could only go on a single turn so i placed a nut over the stud left from the broken bolt and welded the centre of the nut.
I thought this would hold so that a spanner could be used to retrieve the stud but the nut snapped off, this happend several times.
The weld seemed ok with a nice bright orange glow so i don't know where i went wrong.

If there is enough of the stud still sticking out put a larger nut over the stud and then weld it, let it cool, soak the trapped bit of the stud with release fluid.
When it has had time to soak in trying tightening it before attempting to release it.

You could also try welding a bicycle washer to the top face of the stud and then weld a suitable nut onto the washer.
You can get weld to both the inside and outside of the nut for more strength.

To add to the above comments,

Couple of tips,
Snip the ball off the mig wire left over from the last weld for a cleaner start,
Turn the mig up to pretty much its hottest setting and start the weld on the centre of the broken bolt spiralling the weld outwards.

Thank you very for your help, they were all good ideas.


It looked like the stud and welded nut that was already in place were so tight because the stud was slightly bent.
I used a large hilty chisle in the end to just smash the nut off which was welded to the plate.

Im tidying up me axle on the land rover discovery the plate that had the broken bolt in it, is the suspension spring support.
