Results after 1 hour of practice

Been learning MIG at college singe September but as I bought a TIG set this week I thought I would get a bit of tuition in TIG welding.

They have 2 nice Kemmpi Master TIG's.

This is what I ended up with after 1 hour, including prepping the steel.

Its amazing what a good instructor can get a student doing in a short space of time, it looks tidy enough. I was on a course many years ago and the training provider put a girl from the office on the course with us (never welded before never really wanted to was just their policy) let me tell you she was a pretty decent welder after the end of day one.
Tell us who the provider is, it might help someone local

I did a welding course at the local college; 2 weeks of oxy, 7 weeks of MIG and the final week was supposed to be TIG (just 2.5 hours per week).
I stuck on MIG on the final week cos I didn't think I'd ever be able to afford a TIG unit.

Glad I did, cos I don't think I'd be able to do anywhere near as good a job as you have!

What TIG unit did you go with?

Got a TecArc 206i, only tested it on some dirty steel.

I will be making a start on my welding bench tomorrow so will hope I can improve on today's welding and get a slightly thicker weld.

one thing needs bearing in mind if / when you book a course and its the instructor. Some are not that good themselves, some are great but cant teach and some can do both. I know one college were the instructor is only just at the std his students teaching C+G at night school. This guy must be decent guy and deserves credit- that's not taking anything away from the student either

Nice looking run for a weeks worth of tuition let alone an hour.
Little more filler at more intervals will clear up the slight undercutting at the top and bring the freeze frames slightly closer together. Amazing stuff mate took me a dam sight longer I can assure you to get anywhere near that standard.

After one hour practice,95% of result is down to operator.i knew exactly 'how' to Tig when I picked up a torch the first few times,but my hands didn't.it took me I think 6 hours practice to get repeated good beads down

On day two i had gone backwards.bloody stainless has me cursing.ss roots still do!

Tried a bit of 3mm aluminium tonight. Had trouble tacking as my settings and tungsten prep wasn't he best.

I look at the fillet and the runs next to it and it's like 2 completely different skill levels. The fillet looks nice.

Is it a fillet? Or a lap? It's hard to tell with the ally reflecting back. What ever that joint is on the left it's very good.

The blow through at the 'end' of the run was from tacking up.

The flat runs were finding setting.
