Restoring Chisels

Bought this old set years ago at Makro. I suddenly find myself in need of chisels possibly. The FiL will be chuckling in his grave at me having to use something "handraulic" as he liked to say.

Left in the back of a cupboard in the garage etc:

Also got this old Stanley sharpening jig which tbh I never got on with:

They look nice, hardly used.
The blades just need a good ire brushing, with a bench grinder wire wheel.

The blades all ready have the "Ground angle" on already, should be about 30degs.

On a Medium grit Oil stone, use the guide to place a cutting angle on, at 25 deg.

There a good few vids on U tube showing this.

Then all they need is a good wax.

And having a steel end cap, they can be waxed with a metal or wooden hammer.

I quite like the idea of the ire brushing you mention. Is the aim to be more or less angry at the end of it?

There's nothing like having a good indoor workbench:

Had a go with some 80 grit emery cloth and W5 oil. Couldn't find my bag of wire wool:

I think I have an oilstone somewhere. Also a Plasplugs sharpening station in the depths of the garage...

No pain no gain I know but omg this is boring! I may have to abandon it and start something else.

My chippy mate is coming down later. Half hoping he'll take pity and offer to sort them

Gentle, I have a brass wire brus for doing tools.

i made a jig for sharpening abused chissels and planer blades on my belt sander . get them accurately sharpened then put them in a hand jig and sharpen on the oil stone then rub them over a leather strop if corectly done you can easily shave the hairs of the back of your arm in one pass

Found the Plasplugs kit. Must have bought it nearly 40 years ago.

Found an oilstone too. Is it 30 deg for a chisel then 25 deg on the very tip or something?

After I bought my Tormek I bought a load of old 'decent' firmer and bevel chisels - Marples, old Draper, and brought them back to a perfect edge. Some took longer to sharpen depending on how many bricks they had been used to cut.

I have 3 or 4 really nice sets of chisels that keep an edge much longer than new ones.

I keep an old wood chisel as a gasket scraper , just keep a good edge on it. Luckily I find sharpening chisels relaxing unlike drill bits

Getting there I think, only need for one job.

It's quite satisfying to get an edge on a wood chisel that's almost good enough to shave with. Same with plane blades, where the shavings can be made so thin, they are literally almost transparent

I have an oilstone and Stanley jig just like those. Does the job, slowly.

I'd get those digs out with a bench grinder before finishing it by hand, or you'll still be on it in a week's time.

It hasn't been too bad once I started. De-rusting them is a bigger task than sharpening them.

This Plasplugs thing puts a hollow grind on them.

nice set of chisels there try to use your guide though

watch out for those handles they can and do shatter with age as some do use them when they are blunt and over hit the them

They have competitions in Japan for the longest thinnest unbroken shaving…

The smaller chisel looks more like a gouge with the way it’s hollowed
