Restoring a broken gravestone advice.

Are you going to mount the stone vertically? Or horizontally (ie, table top or paving)

You're not going to make the cracks disappear but consolidating the slab will need different techniques depending on the orientation.

I wonder if crushing a piece of the stone and mixing with epoxy would make a matching grout/filler for the cracks.
It's a variation of the woodworking technique where you use sawdust from the timber you're using + pva to make matching woodfiller.

I believe the current paving position that it in is the original one. At the moment I am assuming that it will be going back in that position after restoration. It would be prudent to invest adequate time and effort in leveling and firming the ground prior to reseating back in to position.

I have observed that the headstone has sunk down in the middle. I would guess that loose earth or movement over many years has caused or contributed to the breakage.

Maybe I should put a 3 inch concrete base down prior to laying it down so that it does not happen again?

If it’s open to the public, no matter who owns it, you will still be liable if comeone leans on it and it breaks and injures them

Graves sink as the coffin(s) rot down so the centre of markers become unsupported - it only takes a mower wheel to run over one to cause breaks and/or cracks.

Ah, I was thinking it was going to be replaced standing up as per most are, if its laying down flat, yes a good concrete base to lay it on is the way to go.
