Make yourself aware of where the brake AND fuel pipes run before welding or grinding. If necessary mark the top side with a marker or chalk so you see the lines before diving in with cutter !
Also a fire extinguisher, bucket of sand or at a pinch bucket of water to hand as it's surprising how little of the flames (from burning interior!!) you see through your welding helmet.
You can often find yourself setting fire to the underseal - as Mike says, a bucket of water close by is a good idea. We usually have a damp cloth handy too to quickly put out the flames. Worth buying some cheap dust masks too to wear under your helmet as there can be nasty fumes when welding or when you burn stuff.
Both really good advice. I use welding blanket over everything as well when welding inside the car or grinding. Felt insulation goes up very quickly so always be prepared.
