is that for when she go's swimming?
The sentence I deleted mentioned an unschedueled fishing trip but I thought better of it

Probably been made a bit too hard. Made that mistake a few times. My large anvil has been refaced with hard facing rodsat some point in it's life, it hasn't got the sweet ring of my smaller anvil but it's brilliant for using when smacking the he'll out of something with a BFH.
Problem is flattening those beads back and also the anealing effects on the surrounding area as it coolsHard surfacing rod (not sure if you can get hard surface mig wire?) as used for JCB teeth.
Lay umpteen beads to build up the top, then grind smooth.
To mount it, traditionally a big wooden block or tree stump, sometimes with a shallow recess to match the shape of the feet.
Sounds like a bit of delam under the plate occurredMy large anvil has been refaced with hard facing rodsat some point in it's life, it hasn't got the sweet ring of my smaller anvil but it's brilliant for using when smacking the he'll out of something with a BFH.
I was given a large very old and worn anvil (at least two foot long). I have a much better one about 2/3 the size of this one which I do still use.
While deciding what to do with the larger anvil, I wondered about turning it into a small seat / bench - I thought about drilling / tapping the anvil and countersink bolting a nice lump of oiled hardwood to it.
Anyone seen this done before?
I can't imagine it has much value, so id rather make something out of it.
That would be a crime. If you really don't think its worth that much, sell it to me. I can use it - not for sitting on either!
Straight and with a good rebound worth £100 on top of that and actually still climbingThere was one for sale at an auction in Congleton last Friday which went for £145. Good condition and good size to. I have nowhere to put it so did not bother to bid.
not thinking of dropping her in a deep lake with it are uNice anvil. It would make a nice charm for swmbo`s ankle bracelet,.

this will shrink and ruin the bond between the hard part and body its usually the soft wrought iron thats deformed under the plateHard surfacing rod (not sure if you can get hard surface mig wire?) as used for JCB teeth.

If it’s very old and good quality you’ll find that the body is cast iron and the top a high manganese carbon steel about ¾-1” thick fire welded to the top of the anvil.
Repaired lots over the years.
If the top is cast steel grind all the rust off and use something like a 7018 an build the layers up.
You can then hardface. I forget the consumable I will look later.
You don’t want something as hard as you would use for earth moving equipment.
You want a high Mn consumable.
Used 309 on one and that didn’t come out too bad was fairly hard.
surely you mean wrought iron! the cheapies are made from cast iron not knocking them (sic) as any anvil is better than no anvil

Isn’t she a singer?
Being left out in the rain and being in a fire ruin more anvils than hard useFather in law has a beast of an anvil in his garden about 4cwt, It is very beat up & worn but rings well. It came from the local forge & has to be centuries old. My name is on it & i shall leave it as it is.
