Replacing fascia board.

This is the kitchen extension, 10m by 3m approximately. The fascia board is now totally rotten and the gutter has largely fallen off. I have ordered 15m of 18mm Jumbo board, one 90 degree joint and two end caps, plus all new guttering.

Having never done a fascia board replacement, I was hoping that someone could offer me some pointers about what to expect when I take all the old wood out. Also the flat roof capping has been forced away by the swelling of the wood, how does that get re-instated please?

I am aware that next door's extension is falling away from the house wall, he knows and doesn't seem concerned!

Depends what sort of roof covering I think - if it’s felt then it will have been turned over and (probably) nailed through into the fascia board. You really need to cut through the nails - sliding a multi tool blade up behind the felt is the only sensible way. The fascia board itself is probably nailed or maybe screwed to whatever roof structure is behind it - probably a wall plate. If it’s rotten, it’s probably easiest just to split off what you can, and hammer and chisel the rest off in bits, then cut off all the screws and nails flush. The aim is obviously to not disturb the felt roof if you can avoid it.
once you have got that far it’s downhill - slide a new board up behind the felt, fix it with screws and plugs to the wall, put the gutter brackets back on, job done.

My first question would be what state is the flat roof in? If it will need replacing in the next few years consider doing that first as any work you do on the fascia will involve some disturbance to the roof covering and they always leak when you distub them in my experience.
I think Newlands is correct the felt edge will have been turned over and nailed onto the fascia board thro a spacer batten so most likely that and the fascia are nailed into the joist ends which may well have rotted so be prepared for the worst.
I am sure roofman and gaz will be along with much better answers.
As you may surmise I hate flat roofs.

The edges are separate capping pieces, rather than the edge turned over. It looks in reasonable nick, otherwise I would just EPDM it whilst up there. I also have some loose flashing I see, from the main building that I need to refix.

my advice check your top roof fascia board as well as they dont look too good

I would presume that you would have joists running out from your house wall and over the outside of your garage wall before the fascia board



only once off can you check your joists underneath if they are sound and solid can you fix new fascia board back on after clean up

the roofing trim is a git to get off but it can be done if your slow by prising upwards and twistng it out your after the nails handy to have a grinder to cut them off

remember your not intending to break the roof seal if you do by rushing you will need a torch on stick or tar blocks to reseal roof

one other thing be careful near the top roof output spout area

the flow of water can and does cause wear and tear on any roof more so on tar and felt roofs

remember the flow of a river it wears and erodes away alot with the flow of water and that is happening on your roof when it rains

there is away around it by fitting a gully for it to flow into and away off the roof sort of like a box gully

Started stripping it out today. Some of the beam ends are soggy but solid where they sit on the inner leaf. It doesn't look like it was built with any care. Assorted bricks in there as well as wood. However I can probably drill and plug to get a good fixing.

The window capping is going to be interesting but hopefully it will all come together.

Do the cappings butt up to the main run or go underneath them?

How are the cappings held in place along the top joint, clout nails then sealed?

How do I remount the Jumbo board, drill then screws and screw caps?


Temporary weight to keep the cappings from sliding down.



The joint further along where it hasn't pulled away.




The end of the run where I suppose I do as was, with a larger infill.





Wood as far as the crack, then brickwork.




Gurt gap there, no idea why.





Three beam ends are not capable of taking new fixings but I can fix into the bricks.




All this was full of expanding foam.



The fascia board had another batten to hold the capping , Do I find a uPVC version and glue it on perhaps?



Side elevation is wider so I have had to change my order to include a 300mm. I assume I can just cut its width to spec with normal hand tools? It had also been filled with spray foam. I would have thought it was better to ventilate it rather than do that, but I know nothing of course.

if you need to leave them ends then my advice is to trim them back 1" fit new refter beams at side of them so they become level again

this will give you an air gap that you need dont seal it up damp, best way of wet rot dry rot starting

that end must be aired to help dry it out and stop any wet/dry rot from starting if it gets in the roof its a whole new roof

Well it never rains...

I have had the delivery of materials. 'Er indoors has put them all in the garage, which prevents me getting to the 'bike! Intention was to do the job at the weekend, however mum has had a fall, broken hip, dislocated shoulder and knee suspected, so she is off to hospital. Sunday, I am informed that I am doing taxi service for my Dad to the same hospital for X-rays.

On top of that, we have storms predicted for Saturday so no doubt we will get a soggy kitchen before I can sort it out.

In a sign of the times, we have been told not to ring the hospital for at least four hours. She is very frail at the best of times, so a broken hip is going to be extremely serious.

Very sorry to hear about your Mum ajlectronics falls in older people are not easy they seem to sap their energy certainly did in my mothers case. Looking at those pictures I think I would patch it as best I could for now and reroof it next year possibly a sloping roof.

I have stripped off all the old wood now. I don't have my multitool here, so can't cut away the pins from the cappings today. Much of the long run of capping is coming away and the joint is full of mud, so not confident about rejoining it. I had thought of clout nails then sealant, however there is no boarding on the top just 50mm Celotex. I then considered 3.5 x 80 screws through a piece of uPVC trim with sealant but I am starting to wonder if I am trying to do a King Canute. There is standing water in one part of the roof too, so ideally the covering wants removing and then the Celotex boarded before EPDM. I am exhausted already so it looks like I may have to grease up again, assuming I can find anyone interested. The EPDM is cheap enough and so I could do it myself if I felt fit and confident enough. I also have to be mindful of the weather. I am told that the going rate is £70 per square metre but you can bet that will be nothing like it nowadays. It is 13 m2 so about £900. The last contractor charged me a Grand for a job a third that size over a Dormer window a few years ago.

just buy a roll of torch on felt and replace with new pieces but you will need a blow lamp to fit them

buy 4x2s and make it a sloping roof after that slate, concrete or metal roof

I would like to do the job properly in one go, but a well recommended local expert has given me an estimate that is just going to be impossible, with what I have spent on the driveway already, plus the septic tank to come. The estimate was well within the sort of price I had been told to expect at £120 per m2 plus VAT. Even though it may well be a good deal, I just don't have that sort of money. Me being a total brain dead idiot (for a change!) was multiplying 10m by 3m and coming up with 13m2 would you believe?

I can buy the materials to re-roof it for about a Grand and so I am tempted to have a go myself. Your DVD would be of great interest to me if you would be good enough to trust me with it. The two issues I have are my loss of muscle strength and loss of confidence, both of which I will just have to deal with. Something has to be done sharpish though, it can't be left as is.
