Replacing Chinese Bearings

This made me laugh, one of the drive gears stripped on my Chinese milling machine so I decided to replace all the ball and taper roller bearings with some better quality items while it's apart. All six original bearings are marked Made In China but the SKF replacements are from France, Italy and India!

You wont find much that is made in the UK anymore to expensive to manufacture here hence everything is imported

I remember my Father telling me as a kid about de Havilland Mosquitos being used by BOAC during WWII taking Air Mail and diplomatic papers to Stockholm then bringing back ball bearings from SKF across enemy territory.

You should nip over to Slovenia and see the museums dedicated to the conflict between them and the Italians in WW1: on a par with the Somme but 2000 feet up in 4m of snow. Trenches literally yards apart either side of a mountain ridge; howitzer shells the diameter of 50 gallon oil drums and 5 foot 6 long. The Slovenes won - just, only to give back the land they'd 'won' from Italy at the end of the War.

Just for the record, I'm not saying those countries are incapable of good work, just that its not what they're renowned for. The UK isn't exactly a shining beacon of excellence in any field any more either.

That's interesting, I thought SKF were manufacturing in Slovakia or Slovenia, I forget which. I remember years ago upsetting the local Ford tractor dealer in Indonesia by buying SKF instead of "genuine" Ford bearings at six times the price. I sent our storeman off with instructions to fetch half a dozen different Ford bearings picked at random from the store. When he came back we opened all the boxes and got everything from koyo (before they improved) to nameless made in Poland. Ford man looked a bit sheepish!

yes it is the trouble is no one in this country will invest in any new technology that we develope so what happens ? yes it gets sold abroad and other countries make the proffit and jobs

My old man used to say you could always tell if it was a Italian tank by putting it in gear---- english had 4 speed boxes 3 forward 1 reverse italian tanks were more advanced they had 5 speeds but they had 1 forward -------4 reverse

SKF rules! Just fitted the taper rollers to the spindle on my highly inaccurate Chinese milling machine and the runout has gone from 0.002" to 0.0002". As these two SKF bearings were made in India, does this mean I can now claim my Chinese mill to be a highly accurate Internationally built machine?

My old job used to use skf (from sweden usually, but some marked made in uk) or fag (german) bearings mainly, they were expensive, but you knew just by looking at them they were quality and we never had a minutes trouble with them. I bought some wheel bearings for the bsa a few months back, the box had a name i didn't recognise and when i googled it i found out they were chinese, not impressed.
