Im in the process of preparing to fit a wood burning stove and part of the work will be to replace a stone lintel that is way too low and is also cracked.
Obviously I know the correct way to go about supporting the brickwork above is to use an acro and strong boy but what worries me slightly is that the lintel is the full width of the chimney breast.
By removing it I will also be removing the equivalent of half a brick from each side.
What’s the best course of action there?
A) An acro and strong boy to support each end too?
B) Get someone in to do it?
C) Crack on, nothing bad will happen?
D) Any other approach?
The lintel extends upwards under the plaster line. It’s 14”x4”, the new lintel will need to butt up against the existing bricks.
I’d thought about cutting the lintel and leaving the ends in place and moving the new lintel one course up but that wouldn’t solve the issue as I’d still need to remove bricks to the edge of the breast to be able to get the lintel in.
