Any transformer that can put out 24v at around 100ma or more will work.
I find the circuitry of welders interesting , but I suspect that little of it has been designed by someone who welds.
Most of the faults of the wire drives and the power control circuits are caused by poor design, and are not the result of cost cutting.
The SIP wire feed circuit is a prime example.
