replacement engine needed, must run 'backwards'

Hello, the classic Citroen DS has an ancient four cylinder engine and is woefully underpowered. A Rover V8 would be an ideal swap. Except you will have five reverse speeds and only one forward.

Are there any compact and powerful engines that run 'the wrong way'?

There may well be a marine reverse rotation cam available for the rover V8.

Maybe the diff can be flipped over I have done that on a VW and a Honda S800 after beating the back of the housing for clearance.

The older Honda's like Richie mentions, they'll get you up to about 200 horses depending what you go with.

You could convert a Rover v8 to run backwards. Water pump and oil pump would need changing. Stater shaft might be an issue if it’s directional where the bendix gear runs. Probably could get a camshaft made by the likes of Kent cams to spin the other way. Possibly change the timing chain set up to a gear set up to get a standard cam to run backwards?

Honda four banger probably a lot less hassle…

had the same problem but a smaller engine.....
sent my cam off to be copied but backwards.....
after messing me about form months the old man died and the know-all son said they wont do it ....

I even tried the USA....

once I find another cam I'll modify the front of the engine so the crank goes one way and the cam runs backwards........

just fit a gear inbetween both the engine and drive shaft as the forward engine will run backwards via that way

the ml7 uses this sort of gear to cross thread in forward and reverse gears

Interesting read about a guy that built and sold reverse rotation Rover/Buick engine conversions. There is a name here to be used for an oogle search, may well be one kicking about somewhere.never know your luck. other option is swapping the cam chain/sprockets for a custom made gear set as in crank gear directly running on the cam gear, some feather pluckers on here could probably do that.

How about a Saab 900/9000 engine they sit back to front in the car and I think they run backwards.

I had a similar challenge when I was looking at drive train options for my buggy. I found a local 4×4 machine shop who offered to machine a simple gearbox for £1k. The box was to reverse the drive and lower the gearing.

I went for a totally different drivetrain in the end so didn't need the box in the end.

Another vote for the Honda engine. Got to be a lot less hassle than a Rover (or any "correct" rotation engine).

Didnt they have a Maserati option too ,, friend in Dublin had one , it was a strange old beast , mind you the steering wheel was on the wrong side . oops ,,, his was a cs ,
