repairing shocks

got some new shocks for my quad, second hand and have not been looked after. all the spherical bearing were rusted and had a ton a play. went to fit some new ones today, 3 wents fine untill i got to the last one, i took the circlip out and the bearing had just fell out. its been worn for so long and has enlarged the hole which is sits in, now my new bearing will not fit as its sloppy fit. the shock body is steel, is it possible to put a layer of weld around were the bearing fit then have a machine shop rebore the hole so the bearing fit. a new shock is out of the option, just spend a small fortune on these

you try for an over sized bearing and / or if not that bad get some bearing fit which should cure it if not really bad

i had a hard time finding the bearing i had so i dont think i will have much luck on a larger, is around not sure how much larger is it, not much but enough to make it have slight play,

bearing fit is like locktite you fit your bearing then dripp some into the gap and wait for it to set

Bearing fit wont work if the gap is big enough to need building up with weld. You could try Loctite 660 which will deal with much bigger gaps, but the correct way to repair this is to bore the shock eye out bigger, and sleeve it back to the correct size.

However I wonder if you have checked whether or not the shocks actually work before changing the bearings? I would think that at the very least they will need to be serviced, and may need some internal parts as well?

belzona metal repair is about the best make 2 use all the chemical works use it . and loose it

Belzona that's the stuff,I was going to go into the workshop,as I couldn't remember the name of it, it's not cheap!!

Belzona is likely to cost more than having a proper repair carried out.

we used to use another brand as well "Thistle" supplied in tubes seemed to work as well as belzona,think we purchased it from Buck and Hickman,not sure i would want to repair a shox with it tho

Not sure welding would be a good plan as the heat will travel into the shock and maybe damage the seals (unless you have the unit already stripped of course).
If you weld it up you'll need to have it machined; why not cut out the welding stage and just have it machined out to a decent bore then fit a sleeve down to the right size for the standard bearing?
