Repairing G Clamps ?

I seem to be building up a good selection of G Clamps with the pad that rotates on the end of the screw missing, i have tried welding on washer but they dont work as well if it's not free to rotate, it pulls what your clamping out of alignment. Has anyone found an easy fix for this ?

I dont have a lathe.

You might have better luck using a nut slightly bigger than the little ball at the end of the clamp once the end is in the nut you start building with weld up around the nut so the end can't come back out but still fits loose on the end of the clamp got to be careful or you'll weld the nut to the clamp,, I've done a few like that , after you got that done you can tack a washer or a little plate to the nut so you'll have a clamping base on your work,,,, hope you can understand the thought ,, but it works,,,,

Take your clamp and remove the rotating anvil, check for damage and if no damage is present you lubricate the inside with a little grease, push over the shaft and clamp it to a thick piece of metal, take a small centre punch and punch the top flange at least 4 times at 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees, these 4 punch marks need to be close enough to the edge to stretch the metal over the ball end to prevent the anvil pulling off.

Slight variation on @Fastfingaz
Get a nut what "Just not fits" and heat it to cheery red and chill the ball end.
A sharp tap will "pop" the hot nut over the ball. When it cools down it will be a "wobbly" fit.
Then tack a thick washer or similar onto the nut.

I found another option on tinternet, use a big bolt head, cut off the shank leaving just a stub, drill the shank out to fit over the ball end, and slit it into quarters, crimp the ends over the ball.


Found the Cromwel tools ones, £7.21 ex postage makes them uneconomical.
