How would you thread it if the part is mounted to the cross slide?Seeing the picture of it, that would fit into a lathe with a big enough bore. What is its maximum diameter with the spring removed?
Then you could turn it down, weld it up, turn back to 8mm and re-thread.
Even on a smaller lathe, with some care, you could mount it on the cross slide (two semi-circular wooden blocks) and do the same procedure.
You'd need to put a boring head in the chuck to offset the rotating tool.
When you get to the end of the thread you're cutting you'd have to stop instantly, wind the boring head out, traverse back then wind boring head back in.
Not saying it's impossible but i can't see such a small thread being made to any great standard. Spring/Rigidity of the system will be awful.
