7mm for a fine thread, I believe, or 6.8mm for a coarse thread. 7mm would probably do fine for both since there is no real load on the screw.

Easy way to remember is thread size minus pitch = tapping drill eg M8x1.25 pitch is 8-1.25= 6.75mm drill


It is accurate for 60 degree threads, like UNC/UNF and metric. That covers most threads people will be using these days.so that's how you work it out
